About the Doodle-Bonds project

As someone who has been trying to master the difficult language of Greek, I began to look for new ways to help widen my vocabulary and master more complex Greek words. My mathematical brain began to notice patterns and I decided to create characters to help remember the meanings of Greek prefixes. Each prefix's character demonstrates the meaning of the prefix and my brain found it easier to remember characters rather than abstract words. I created over 50 videos and began sharing them in the Learn Greek Doodle-Bonds Facebook group. As members of the group grew more enthusiastic about the method, I widened it to include suffixes and then word families.

For over a year I have been creating and sharing free content and was encouraged by the group to collect them together and publish them as books. Here are some reviews of Learn Greek Doodle-Bonds...

'So logical and helpful for someone with basic knowledge of Greek. A great way to build vocabulary.' Tom

'This learning method has sparked so many “lightbulb moments” for me, especially when it comes to connecting words, even some Greek ones I’ve known for a long time! The videos are fun and engaging, while the worksheets are wonderfully thorough and super helpful. I’ve already recommended this (currently a Facebook page) to other Greek learners—and even to a few non-Greek learners—because it’s just that good!' Lani

'Hilary’s Doodle-Bonds have really helped me to remember lots of words. And even work out new words for myself. Having an actual understanding of how the words are made up is such a great way of learning (and remembering) vocabulary.' Denny

'Very logical way, makes it easier to remember words and meanings.' Danielle

'This method has been so useful for me, breaking down the words in a logical fashion has enabled me to make a lot more sense out of living day to day in Greece!' Kathryn

'Such useful tips. I now know that anything ending in ειο is where something happens. I just didn't realise before.' Trish

'This method is compelling as it's approach is quite original. I wouldn't say it could fit a beginner level but if you are on the way of learning greek for a while it's surely a useful complementary approach. Presenting the prefixes in the way they modify the meaning of the word is fascinating! The given examples are here to make you feel the subtle senses. Let's emphasise that presentation is prime! Sometimes the funny little characters drawn on the sides could help to remember a word. And the video are clean and .. hit the target. Brilliant work and a must have for medium level learners. Please Hilary, keep going.' Eric

'Great FB page. I'm beginning to make a breakthrough with Greek after years of trying.'

'Just came across your method. And in addition to the order courses it feels really natural. I already discovered logic that I never knew before.' Ray

'Thank you so much for your Doodle Bonds. It’s such a great resource. Now when I come across a new word I’m trying to figure out the construction rather than just trying to memorise it. It helps so much!' Helen

'I've been studying Greek for more time than I'm willing to admit! Finding your site was a dream-come-true, since I also love etymology. I can't believe how much work you have put into it. Thank you! And thank you for sharing your backstory a few weeks ago. It was super interesting to see how your mathematical mind led you to this fabulous project!' Rena

'I was floundering on what and how to study in order to progress my Greek along with all my other resources and you present a different angle that is both interesting and helpful. Ευχαριστώ.' Jude

'Keep doing it! It would be nice if you can collect all of your slides in a pdf offering it for sale.' Carlo
